SECTION 1.
Sir,
Admiralty to Foreign Office.—(Received January 18.)
Admiralty, January 15, 1907. I AM commanded by my Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty to transmit herewith for the information of the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, extract from a letter dated the 17th December, with its inclosures, which has been received from the Commander-in-chief, China, relative to affairs on the China Station.
I am, &c.
(Signed)
EVAN MACGREGOR.
(Extract.)
Inclosure in No. 1.
Vice-Admiral Sir A. Moore to Admiralty.
NO serious cases of piracy have been reported from the West River since my last general letter. The "Moorhen," ""Robin,' and "Sandpiper" are carrying out the new system of patrol, and the German gun-boat "Tsingtau is co-operating with them. I am informed that the new Viceroy of Canton purposes taking active measures for the suppression of piracy, and that, although of pro-German tendencies, he intends to call on Mr. Tyler (an Englishman) of Shanghae, who is closely connected with the Chinese navy, to assist and advise him. I am further informed that the force of guard-boats on the river has been increased, but if the new ones are of the same type as the old no advantage is likely to accrue.
